Today I started reading Peopleware.
I'll post my impressions about the book once I finish it, but what I can say after reading about 20 pages: this is an excellent book.
It seems to be (according to what I have read so far) one of the best books that I've read.
Can't wait to get back to reading it....

The GIF Pronunciation Page offers several proofs as to whether you are supposed to pronounce .GIF image files as JIF or like the word gift.
It displays some pretty concrete proof that the correct way to pronounce it is "JIF".
I'm personally surprised, I was SURE that it is pronounced like gift.
I don't know if I'll get used to the change.

This cool mini radio controlled helicopter weighs only 48 grams!!
It is built using very cheap parts (the motor costs only $8) but the guy that builds them doesn't sell any, he just tries to create prototypes that are lighter and lighter.

Using LiveSticks (a small PC program) you can make any game controller a MIDI controller.
Ever since I got it my Micro$oft Force Feedback Steering Wheel I've been wanting to see how I can use its pedals in a MIDI setup.
Now I can try....

MiniPC is a cool new mini PC from Paul (the dude from Microsoft) Allen's company (Vulcan).
It's a bit larger than a PDA but it's much smaller than a notebook and it runs Windows XP.
I wonder how that small keyboard is.

Sony Clie Compact Flash Drivers
|
|
|
 |
 |
|
|
 |
 |

After many petitions from the guys at ClieSource (and many emails to Sony), Eruware, a third party, has developed compact flash drivers for the Sony Clie NX and NR series.
This enables Clie owners to use the Compact Flash slot with standard Compact Flash cards (and other Compact Flash devices), not only with the original Sony Wi-Fi card.
The drivers cost $27.
Now I need to find a compact flash radio that will work with these drivers....
Update (2003-04-27 00:01:05):
I just got a reply from EruWare Support regarding using their drivers for devices other than storage.
Unfortunately, it turns out that their drivers will only work with Compact Flash storage. That means my "dream" of using attaching a radio Compact Flash card (using their drivers) just flew out the window.
My only hope is that the storage drivers are so successful that they develop drivers for other CF cards, including a CF radio card (or that another company develops such a card and the necessary drivers).
Damn it!

Today I added a list of the titles of the 10 last posts in Guy's World to the main page of guymal.com.
That means that you can see the recent posts from the main page and if you see something that looks interesting you can click on Guy's World (maybe this will create some more traffic to Guy's World, from people who arrive somehow to the main page).

I just installed w.bloggar (and am creating this post using it).
It's a free program for managing you web log, offering some cool stuff like uploading files, HTML syntax highlighter, custom tags, the ability to create posts offline, and my favorite: a spell checker.
I installed this a while ago, but ended up uninstalling it since it didn't give me much added value.
Lately, I've been hearing about it more and more so I decided to give it a second chance (and see how it interacts with the new content management system I'm using, MovableType).
I'm still exploring bloggar and its many options so I'll probably post an update once I get more familiar with it (I'm basically creating this post in order to try out bloggar :o).

Here's a cool game that I liked to play when I was a kid: Spy Hunter
It was a true classic during its time and this online version is exactly like the original one.
Midway has a modern version of Spy Hunter for the PS2, Xbox, and GameCube.
I gotta check out the PS2 version...

The book Letters from a Nut is not a book about software (like the books I usually write about) but it's just a fun book to read.
I heard about this book a while ago (since Jerry Seinfeld wrote the introduction it got quite a bit of publicity) and picked it up at Amazon when I recently ordered some books.
The book is a collection of letters that Ted L. Nancy (a nut) sent to various people and organizations. He writes about things like asking a hotel if they found a sword that he forgot in their restrooms or asking Greyhound bus if he can travel dressed as a giant radish.
Some of the letters aren't that funny but many really make you laugh out loud.
Overall a fun and easy read.

Well, UpSave is back online.
I don't know what the problem was but Hypermart (the free web host where UpSave is hosted) sent me a mail that the site is working fine.

It seems that for several days UpSave has been down.
I tried to contact HyperMart (the free web host where UpSave is hosted) but only Premium members can contact their technical support!
I sent an e-mail to their sales department (they are the only ones I can mail!) asking them to help me.
I'm pretty much at their mercy till they decide to do something.

Jennifer Lopez recently said: "I definitely see a lot of me in the character." regarding playing the role of a
housekeeper in her new film.
This from a woman who recently traveled 90 meters by limousine from one London hotel to another and whose entourage includes an eyebrow specialist and an eyebrow assistant!
Shut up!

Build-It: Save Money with a Linux Media Jukebox
This article shows how to create a media jukebox for real cheap.
It is based on Linux and can store digital images, rip and store all your music, play MPEG videos (and DVDs), and even record TV.
I would definitely build one if I had access to the parts.

Not only are the ads on the site gone, but I also am in the midst of migrating Guy's World to Movable Type (instead of Blogger).
I was having a lot of trouble with Blogger and Movable Type is absolutely amazing.
There are a lot of new features in Guy's World thanks to Movable Type (comments for example).
I still haven't finished migrating everything yet so some of the things here may not work (or just look a little weird). I hope to finish everything over the weekend.

No more banners on the site!
I just upgraded to the Netfirms paid web hosting service.
That means that for $60 a year I get 50MB disk space, 2GB monthly transfer, no ads, and a bunch of other stuff.
I could probably get a better deal but it's not worth the headache of transferring a site to a new web host.

Today I purchased a copy of Serif 3DPlus 3 and the 3DPlus 3 Resource CD.
I've been using Serif PhotoPlus 8 for a while now and it's great.
Serif sent me an email offering me each CD for only ~$6.
After the flawless experience I've had with Serif and their products I quickly obliged and purchased them both.
I hope they arrive soon.

After several days of playing
|
|
|
 |
 |
|
|
 |
 |

After several days of playing Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy and Midnight Club Street Racing on the PS2 I changed my mind a bit about my initial thoughts:
At first (after the first day of playing) I thought that Jak and Daxter was cool but too complicated, which makes it less fun to play.
After burning several hours on it, I changed my mind: it's a great game. I would make it less complicated but once you get a hang of it then it's a lot of fun.
My number one tip for this game: listen to what the characters say to you. The first time I played I didn't really listen to them (like I would never really listen to any of the characters in the Crash games) and that's why I didn't know what to do (and the game seemed more complicated than it really is). Once I understood that you must listen to the different creatures that you encounter while you play (and they'll tell you what you need to do) I found the game much less complicated.
Oh yea, there is one very annoying thing: if you start a new game then there's the usual intro movie. I usually watch it once and then skip it. In Jak & Daxter you can't skip the movie! If you load a saved game then it's ok (you start from where you left off) but every time you start a new game you have to endure the entire boring intro movie (and it's at least 5 minutes long!).
I guess they wanted to ensure that you would listen and understand the story so the game will be less complicated.

There's a new time waster in our lives: a PS2!
I finally broke down and got one after several years of refusing to.
In addition to the standard PS2 and memory card I also got
Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy and Midnight Club Street Racing.
I managed to slip in several games of each last night and here's what I think (so far):
Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy is pretty cool, very Crash Bandicoot.
The only caveat I have so far is that it's too complicated.
With Crash you always know where you are supposed to go. In Jak & Daxter you can go just about anywhere you want in the 3D world, so you don't always know where to go in order to proceed with the game. |
Midnight Club Street Racing is very GTA3, visually.
The graphics aren't quite as good as GTA3 but look very similar.
The gameplay is quite good and controlling the cars is real fun.
Having played GTA3 it was a bit of a disappointment (since essentially it's just like the driving portion of GTA3) but I expect to have some fun with it.

Today I finally finished setting up the home theater!
After running into several problems over the past month, we were able to pass all the speaker wires through a little tube in the wall and hook up the rear speakers.
Finally (after about 4 months) everything is set up like I want it and we can watch DVDs like god intended to.
