 |

There's another addition to the guymal Source Code section: Restrict number of digits after decimal point Perl function is a small function that lets you restrict the number of digits after a number's decimal point.
An example of its output is:
"11.2999999999",cut third digit is: 11.30
"12.345",cut third digit is: 12.35
"12.345",cut second digit is: 12.3
"13.34",cut third digit is: 13.34
"14.3",cut third digit is: 14.3
"15",cut third digit is: 15

Check out Mutant Digital Toy.
It lets you create faces using the eyes, noses, and mouths of different people.
The faces that you create look really great and the images are seamless.
Great use of Flash.

Peopleware is one of the best books that I've read.
Really!
This book is a must read for anyone in the software industry, especially for all software development-team leaders and managers.
As its name suggests: this book is about the people who create software, what usually goes wrong with software projects, and most important: how to make sure these problems don't happen to you (and when they do happen, how to solve them).
Peopleware is a pretty short book and a very fun, easy read.
If you only read one book on software development: this is the one to read.

The small little download (just 190KB) lets you save a web page as a single file that includes all the graphics on the page.
This is great if you want to save a web page without having to worry about multiple files (like IE creates).
The instructions for saving a web page are pretty simple and appear at the bottom of the download page.
Office 2000 Add-in: Web Archive
BTW: In IE you can also save a web page as a single file (.mht) by clicking "File", "Save As...", and select "Web Archive, single file (*.mht)" in the "Save as type" field in the dialog that opens.

You may have noticed that new little Speak button in the top right of each post.
If you click on it you'll be able to hear the post.
Thanks to this article: How to make your weblog posts speak in Movable Type (Dane Carlson's Weblog) adding it was a sinch.
I added the JavaScript code for randomizing the voice that is used each time you press the Speak button (every time you click on a Speak button you'll hear a different voice, one of: crystal, mike, rich, rosa, klara, reiner, alain, juliette, charles, or audrey).
Now that's cool :o)

Check out the preview for MSN Messenger version 6.
It has some cool new features like animated emoticons, backgrounds, and a new interface.
Yesterday I tried out the webcam chat with a friend of mine (who also installed the new version) and it worked like a charm.
Very cool.

Japanese artist Mariko Mori created this huge bubble called "Wave UFO". The installation, in New York, is 34 feet long and 17 feet high.
Three people can enter the thing at a time; they lie down on surfaces covered in a modern gel, half fluid, half solid.
Electrodes are placed on their heads, and then for seven minutes they watch a computer animation, projected on the dome interior. And the animation is partly controlled by their brain activity!

Whoever has time to check out the tons of sites that are updated daily, please raise your hand...
What no hands raised?
Well, for people who don't have time to regularly check out the sites that interest them comes a cool service called Pusher.
Pusher is a free on-line service for getting updates, by e-mail, about your favorite sites.
You can subscribe to site feeds that interest you and once the site is updated you'll get an e-mail with whatever was updated.
Very cool and straightforward.

guymal.com Wallpaper is available for downloading.
This is the wallpaper that I use on all (most of) my machines.
It's a photo that I took a while ago of my guitar.
I had to pump up the jpg compression in order to keep the file size down (77KB) but if you want a better quality image then drop me a word.
In order to save the image either right click on the the thumbnail at the left and click "Save Target As..." or open the thumbnail and then (after the full image loads) click "Save Picture As...".

Pearl Jam has ended their contract with Epic (after 12 years) and instead is going for an Internet distribution strategy.
They decided that they don't need a major label and so far it seems to be working.
This could be the beginning of a new era in the music industry.

It seems that I'm not the only one who left Blogger.
It's becoming a trend.
Not that I have anything against Blogger, it's just that the other available alternatives are better.
The article explains some of the differences between different content management systems and why you shouldn't use Blogger if you are serious about blogging.

Turns out that the salads at McDonalds, Burger King, and other health food joints aren't really healthy.
According to this article the salads (especially the salad dressings) are just about as fat as the real food they offer (yummy burgers).
So if you plan to eat the salad with dressing and all you might as well just order the burger and fries and enjoy yourself.
And you felt good about yourself that you're eating the salad....

After 70 years Volkswagen said it will stop making old Beetles this summer.
It turns out that VW has been manufacturing old Beetles in their plant in Puebla, Mexico. The plant will continue to produce the New Beetle sedan.

A federal court ruled that consumers can keep cell phone numbers when they switch to new providers.
The Federal Communications Commission is requiring wireless carriers to provide "number portability" by Nov. 24.
The wireless industry estimates that number portability will cost more than $1 billion in the first year and $500 million each year thereafter.

Check out these quotes for programmers
Some of the cool ones are:
- That's the thing about people who think they hate computers. What they really hate is lousy programmers. (Larry Niven)
- There's an old story about the person who wished his computer were as easy to use as his telephone. That wish has come true, since I no longer know how to use my telephone. (Bjarne Stroustrup)
- If McDonalds were run like a software company, one out of every hundred Big Macs would give you food poisoning -- and the response would be, "We're sorry, here's a coupon for two more". (Mark Minasi)
- How would a car function if it were designed like a computer? Occasionally, executing a maneuver would cause your car to stop and fail and you would have to re-install the engine, and the airbag system would say, "Are you sure?" before going off. (Katie Hafner)
- If the automobile had followed the same development cycle as the computer, a Rolls-Royce would today cost $100, get a million miles per gallon, and explode once a year, killing everyone inside. ("Robert X. Cringely", Computerworld)
- A computer lets you make more mistakes faster than any invention in human history - with the possible exceptions of handguns and tequila. (Mitch Radcliffe)

Metallica Offers Songs Over the Internet

Just three years after suing Napster about downloading music off the Internet, Metallica are offering their songs over the Internet.
Their first album in six years will contain a code that allows people to access exclusive tracks from the Internet.
It's great to see the biggys finally adopt the Internet and harness its power instead of just trying to fight it.

Palm buys rival Handspring!
The weird thing is that Handspring founders Jeff Hawkins, who invented the first Palm handheld, and former CEO Donna Dubinsky, established Palm in 1992 and were the top names at Palm until they left in 1998 to start Handspring.
Seems like they're back to where they started.

According to this article Keanu Reeves gave £50 million to the "unsung heroes" of 'The Matrix' - the costume and special effects teams (there are 29 of them so each gets £1.75 million).
Keanu says that he already has enough cash and that "I could live on what I have already made for the next few centuries".
Nice!
BTW: Keanu is expected to make a total of £70 million from the films, thanks to a deal which guarantees him a 15 per cent profit-share, so he will still net around £20 million.

From the New York Daily News 13-May-03
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/local/story/83163p-76105c.html:
Manhattan, New York, detective Frank Sola scared the fellow police officers at the crowded W. 10th Street station house when he handed a prisoner his 9-mm handgun in response to the prisoner's remark that "Without your gun, you're sh**." The stunned prisoner, after being asked by Sola, "Okay, now what are you going to do," fortunately handed back the loaded gun containing 16 rounds.
Sola has been suspended for "the good of the department," said a spokesperson for the police.

Today I "installed" Knoppix.
Basically, Knoppix is a bootable CD that has a Linux distribution with tons of programs pre-installed.
It has automatic hardware detection, and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and other peripherals.
"KNOPPIX can be used as a Linux demo, educational CD, rescue system, or adapted and used as a platform for commercial software product demos. It is not necessary to install anything on a hard disk.
Due to on-the-fly decompression, the CD can have up to 2 GB of executable software installed on it."
My remarks on Knoppix: amazing!
Totally.
All I had to do was download the file (~700MB), burn it, put it in the CD tray, and boot the PC.
After that everything worked like a charm: it detected my hardware and loaded Linux with just about every application you could need.
And it had network connectivity without any manual intervention.
Nothing!
I just booted the machine and was connected to the net!
Absolutely amazing.
