One of the coolest things about the new version of MSN Messenger (6.0) is all the new emoticons, especially the animated ones.

And another new thing that they added there is the ability to create your own emoticons.

I added two: and (heh heh, heh heh heh)

Try to find small images for your custom emoticons otherwise when messenger resizes them they won't look good.

Star Wars Kid Update

The parents of the Star Wars Kid are suing his classmates who posted the video on the Internet.

They want $160,000 from the families of the four classmates who published the video.

"Ghyslain's parents claim their son was so humiliated, he is undergoing psychiatric care and may be marked for life by the experience. "

The poor kid had to drop out of school and finished the semester at a children's psychiatric ward.

Due to all the cruel remarks that have been posted about Ghyslain many people are trying to help him.
Two people raised money to buy him an iPod, two other people raised more than $4,300 from 421 separate donations, and a petition to get Ghyslain a part in the next Star Wars movie has been signed by more than 30,000 people.

Now that's Smart

Well actually it isn't a Smart but the Tango is a cool tiny car that can do 0 to 100kmh in less than 4 seconds and can go 130km for each 3 hour charge (using a standard electricity socket).

And it's thinner than some motorcycles!

What more you ask?
Some of the highlights:
Safety? It has jet-pilot seat belts and a racing-regulation roll cage; it weighs more than 3,000 pounds, about the same as a Toyota Camry, including 1,100 pounds of Yellow Top batteries under the floorboards as ballast, so it's not tippy on turns.

Storage? Enough room for a back-seat passenger, a couple briefcases and workout gear or a baby seat, umbrella stroller and diaper bag or 12 sacks of groceries.

How much? Eighty grand for the first, hand-assembled, leather-lined luxury models with 400-watt Nakamichi sound systems; later on, it's hoped, $20,000 or less for a mass-produced people's version.

This two-person, commuter concept car could very well alleviate air pollution, cruise past freeway congestion, shimmy through urban gridlock and actually find a parking spot.

Swedish Cookies

Starting Friday, 25 July 2003 Swedish websites must have the user's consent to use cookies.

What the?

This means that Swedish web sites can either not use cookies or they have to create a page where they tell the user what they are using the cookie for and whether the user agrees to use them.

This is a tremendous problem since many websites rely on cookies for session management and they would have to recode their entire sites (read: a nightmare).

Buying The Cow

Get this DVD at Amazon Buying The Cow was the movie that we saw this weekend.
It's an ok film but nothing great.
The movie started out pretty good but got boring by the end.

There were some funny scenes especially the scenes with Ryan Reynolds (Mike Hanson) that kept the movie moving along.

UpSave UpDated

UpSave.com was successfully transferred to the new server and it seems like everything is working smoothly.

I was even able to keep the existing "UpSave button" and "UpSave Quick Links" URLs working (at first I though that I wouldn't be able to keep the existing URLs which means that I would have to tell all UpSave users to update those links).

Now everybody can use UpSave with all those annoying ads and popups!

TextAmerica

I removed the mobile-cam thumbnail from the site's template.

Even though it's essentially a MoBlog (before they invented the MoBlog), it's easier to post images to my text-america account and so I just decided that I'd post the pictures there.

Another added value is that Text-America places the picture I post on their front page (for a short while) and this generates some more traffic to guymal.com.

One Password

This is a pretty cool idea: Password Scrambler 1.0 lets you have one password for all the websites that you use but uses it to generate unique passwords according to the URL of the website.

That way every site has a different, secure password and you only have to remember your master password.

The idea is great (that's why I'm writing about it here) but I do not use this software since you can't get the list of all of your site passwords.
Maybe if they add that feature and make it easy to backup all your passwords (especially to sync them with my Palm Pilot) I'll use this program.

Oh yea, it is integrated with Microsoft IE in the button toolbar and automatically fills in your passwords.

Enter your birthday into the Age Gauge and it will tell you how old you were when historic events happened.

It will also show you how much younger (and older) you are than some celebrities.

This is some very important information!

New Sony Clie

Sony Japan has uncovered a new CLIE: the PEG-UX50!

The UX50 is the first PDA to have both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

It runs Palm OS 5.2, has an amazing 480x320 screen, and since the swivel screen is horizontal then there is more room for the keyboard.

Like some other Clie's (like my excellent NX-70V), the UX50 also has an integrated 0.3 megapixel digital camera, MP3 playback, and video playback software.

Enough words, here's a picture of it:

Feedreader

Yesterday I posted a challenge:
Tomorrow I'll write about the feed reader that I use (there's a hint of which one I use somewhere here...).
I'll give 11 apples to whoever finds out which reader I'm using.

Well the answer is Feedreader (ahh now I get it).

Feedreader is a very simple program that sits in your system tray (you know those little icons near the Windows clock) and automatically downloads the latest headlines from RSS feeds that you give it.

It's very simple to use and pretty stable (even though it is still in Alpha stages).

Oh yea, don't forget to add the Guy's World RSS Feed so you always know when this site is updated.

And the winner of the 11 apples is: Dave
Congratulations!

Those Orange Icons

What are those orange XML icons you see popping up all over the web you ask?

You know, these:

Those orange thingys are the URLs to feeds in order to syndicate the web site.
Say what?

Ok, ok, I'll explain:
Using XML (or sometimes called RSS, Rich Site Summary) feeds you can get a summary of the web site and do something with it, like display the latest news headlines in your website, display the latest Guy's World posts, the latest Guy's World MoBlog images,....you get the point.

If you click on one of those links with your web browser you'll probably see a pretty weird page that you don't really know what to do with.

The idea is to use these feeds in different applications (not your web browser) that know how to read and understand them.
For example: the free Pusher service that I wrote about a while ago takes XML feeds (that you give it) and sends you an e-mail you every time the web site you're interested in is updated.
That way you don't have to visit a web site to see if it has been updated, you'll automatically get an e-mail with the updated part (instead of you going to the site and pulling the information, the information is pushed to you automatically).

There are also special programs that you can download (feed clients) and they can aggregate several feeds into one application.
That way always have your favorite web sites' latest headlines waiting for you.

Many web sites are adding news feeds to their sites and there are more and more applications that know how to utilize these feeds.

Tomorrow I'll write about the feed reader that I use (there's a hint of which one I use somewhere here...).
I'll give 11 apples to whoever finds out which reader I'm using.

Billiards 4.12 is the best game I've seen for the Palm Pilot.
It has excellent graphics and sounds, and is just really fun to play.
It supports Hi Res+ (320x480) so it really makes good use of the Sony Clie NX70v.

You can play either against the computer, two players on the same device, or two players using IR.

Don't forget to turn up the sound when you play this one, the sound FX are really great.

Jackass - The Movie

Get this DVD at Amazon I'm not going to say much about Jackass - The Movie since it's just like the TV show.

If you like the TV show then you'll like this movie.
It's just a bit more out there.

I'm seriously surprised that Steve-O is still alive after this movie, for real.

One thing I was a bit disappointed about the movie is that it was exactly like the TV show and I had expected them to exploit the silver screen a bit more.
Other than that it's just pure Jackass.

My MoBlog

There's something new at guymal.com (although I haven't added links to it yet, other than this):
Guy's World Moblog.

What is a MoBlog you ask?
A MoBlog is a Mobile Blog.

There's a free service from textamerica.com that lets you create a MoBlog and post to it by sending an email with the picture as an attachment.

Basically, the Mobile-Cam has been a MoBlog (before they coined the term) so I still haven't decided how to merge between the Guy's World Moblog, the Mobile-Cam, and the Mobile-Cam Archive.

There are some images in the MoBlog that haven't been seen here so check them out.

ZLauncher

ZLauncher is an amazing launcher for Palm Pilot.

I installed it yesterday on my Sony Clie NX-70V and it works like a charm (it has support for Sony High-Resolution(320 X 320) and High-Resolution+ (320 X 480)).

This thing has lots of features (you can see a list of them on their web site) like tabs, quick launch, background images, themes, expansion card browsing....but basically it makes your Palm Pilot look cool :-)

I was using the Sony Clie default launcher up till now which looks a lot cooler than the standard Palm launcher (you can switch between them on the Clie) but it has some usability problems (it can be pretty difficult to find the app you are looking for) so I switched to ZLauncher.

Its basic layout is similar to the classic Palm launcher but it adds much more.

You can also download themes for ZLauncher.
ClieSource has some excellent themes and background images.

My favorite theme is Remixed Theme by Gavin Jones which was created using the best elements of some different themes (I can't seem to find the link to download it (even though I downloaded it several hours ago)).

SplashID for Palm

I've been using CryptInfo for several years in order to keep track of all my web logins and passwords (I have over 200!).
The main problem that I had with it is that I couldn't access my information from my desktop PC (since I'm using a very old version of CryptInfo (2.4.1 from 1999), the newer versions also have a desktop application that syncs with the handheld).
I'd heard that a lot of people use SplashID for saving their login information on their Palm Pilot (and syncing it with a desktop computer).

I installed SplashID yesterday (without a hitch) and played around with it quite a bit.
It's pretty cool and straight-forward.

You can access all your information on either the PDA or the desktop and the information is synced and backed up.

Now the only problem that I have is getting all my information out of CryptInfo and into SplashID (the old version of CryptInfo doesn't have an export function).

So far I've manually converted the letters A-F...
