Here's a game for the entrepreneur in you.
Ok, maybe it's for the entrepreneur in your kids (I guess I'm still a kid :o)
It teaches the basics of recognizing an opportunity for a business, raising capital for running the business, marketing, knowing your customers...
Pretty good idea.

Sony is going to start selling the PS2 in China.
The big news here is that China has been known to have high rates of piracy so the PS2 games will cost far less than they do in the US or the UK, but still be slightly more that pirated discs.
The problem is that only two or three games will be available at launch which will just increase piracy in order to get more games.

Avalanche is another online flash game.
The way this game works is that you have a bunch of different color balls falling from the top and when 3 or more of the same color touch each other you click them and they disappear.
There are many games based on the same concept but in this one you have different goals you need to achieve in each level.
The most common goal is that there are several balls with stars on them and you need to clear them a path so that they reach the bottom of the screen.
Watch out cuz this one is pretty addictive.

Here's a web application that shows you what your site looks like using the Safari browser.
You can download a screen shot of what your site looks like on the Mac.
It does take about 20 seconds to generate the screen shot so be patient.

Gyration has come out with a wireless gyroscopic mouse.
Basically the mouse looks like a TV remote but it's a mouse that you can control by waving around in the air.
Looks like a natural addition to my media PC but the only problem with it is that the "Media Center Remote & Keyboard" set cost $180.
A bit too much for a mouse and keyboard.

You know how over the years there have been tons of Tetris variations?
There's Tetris plus, Tetris 2000, 3D Tetris....
I happened to stumble on this version of Tetris: Tetris 1D (instead of the classic 2D).
I'm sure this can provide hours of fun (wink wink)...
Update: it moved to www.tetris1d.org

This typing game is a great way to train for carpal tunnel syndrome!
It's a very simple game where you see letters fly across the screen and you need to type them before they reach the end of the screen (then they disappear).
I got 615 points (but at the end I was more or less just banging on the keyboard).

This sounds like an urban legend (that's why it's from snopes.com) but it is a true story.
The County of Los Angeles has banned the use of the terms master/slave (which is the common term used when configuring several hard drives in one computer, among other things)!
Somebody there thinks that the term master/slave is offensive so now LA County requires that vendors working with the county remove all master/slave references!
That is unbelievable.
I'm surprised they didn't just put a total ban on the word slave and get it over with...

Now that's what I call a tree house.
Just looking at the picture gets a big WOW.
For one million big ones you get a four story high tree including house, 2 gaming consoles, a state-of-the-art entertainment center (including 2 20" LCD monitors and a Sony 50" plasma TV), twin bed, telescope, mini fridge, phone and satellite service, carpet, Foosball game, a bunch of tables, chairs, and benches, and much more...
And get what it says at the bottom: "Allow 6 to 12 months for construction and installation depending on location and state/local building codes".
Talk about having the coolest tree house on the block!

News-Images.com displays the current images from many news sites.
That way instead of having to actually read what's in the news you can just see the pictures and click on the images that seem interesting to you.
Sometimes you can see that an image appears several times in different sites so you know that it's a popular story.

Yesterday I updated the site's style sheet and CssCreator could have helped me.
CSS Creator lets you select HTML elements, define their CSS properties, preview what they will look like, and generate the CSS code.
It's a bit buggy but overall it works and really helps you try out different colors and other settings.

Tinchilla is an instant can cooler.
It can chill a regular can of soda from room temperature to frosty cold in 60 seconds.
The Tinchilla works by spinning the can at an optimized speed so that the metal of the can is rapidly chilled by exposing its surface to ice cubes and water surrounding it.
In addition, the spinning causes a whirlpool inside the can which allows as much of the drink as possible to be exposed to the now chilled surface of the can thus rapidly transferring the heat from inside to the surrounding water and ice.
They claim that even though they are spinning the can you can still open it right away, without it spraying all over you (I'd like to see that).

A few days ago the $11 Ritz digital camera was hacked enabling people to extract their digital pictures from it for free.
The idea behind the Ritz $11 digital camera is that you buy the camera from them for very little but only Ritz can access the pictures inside so you must go back to them and pay them another $12 to save your photos on a CD (only they can get your pictures out of the camera), very similar to a disposable camera.
Now that the camera has been hacked, people can just pay the $11 and they have a simple digital camera.
Cool!

Here's something really cool: the bio motion lab.
On this site you can see how different types of people move differently.
All you see is a dot figure (like a stick man but without the lines that connect between the joints) that is walking.
You can choose what type of person you want to see (male/female, heavy/light, nervous/relaxed, happy/sad) and then you see the difference in the figure's movement.
It's quite amazing how you can recognize the differences in the walk between a happy and a sad person.

This site lets you rate people who think that they look like famous people.
The idea is pretty simple: people who think that they resemble somebody famous send in their picture and you (yes YOU) can browse random pictures of these quasi celebs and rank each one.
There are some people there who look exactly like some famous people (I'm pretty sure that one of the pictures that was submitted is a picture of the real celeb) and there are some that don't even come close.

I've been an avid supporter of the excellent Dave's Quick Search Deskbar, which lets you search numerous online resources from your desktop (you can easily lookup a word in the dictionary, find acronyms, search Google, convert currencies, and quickly access just about any other site that you need).
Now Google has come out with a similar product: the Google Deskbar.
The Google Deskbar lets you search Google without opening your browser.
You just enter some keywords in the text field on your deskbar (very much like Dave's Quick Search Deskbar) and a window with your search results quickly opens.
Additional options let you search other site (also like Dave's Quick Search).
You can search for movie reviews, stock quotes, and some other sites.
The Google bar main advantage over Dave's bar (as far as I can currently see) is that Dave's bar opens Internet Explorer for displaying results, which can take a while to open (depending on your computer) whereas the Google Deskbar quickly slides up a window (with some cool animations) with your results.
Therefore not only does Google's application give you faster results, they also look cooler (not just an Internet Explorer window).
The advantage that Dave's Deskbar has over Google's is that it is mainly written in HTML so you can pretty easily add your own custom searches (I added the ability to search your UpSave bookmarks and added custom searches that I use to search the Intranet at work).
Therefore there are a lot more searches in Dave's Deskbar.
Google's Deskbar does have the ability to add your own searches but it is not as powerful as Dave's.
The Google Bar is still in beta version so there may be some problems with it but I'm sure that they'll gradually stabilize and improve it.
Update: I uninstalled the Google Deskbar since I never seemed to use it (though I do keep using Dave's Quick Search Deskbar).

Microsoft is finally going to add a pop up blocker to Internet Explorer.
It will be added in the next service pack update for Windows XP.
The benefit of using a built in popup stopper is that usually it works faster than 3rd party blockers and that since "everybody" will have one advertisers may slowly stop using popup ads.

It's also recyclable and there's a $5 incentive to return it (or you can just throw it away).

Hotmail.co.uk Up For Grabs

Microsoft forgot to renew the domain name for hotmail.co.uk!
This is quite amazing.
I have a domain name that is going to expire in a few months (don't worry not guymal.com) and every week I get these warning emails that the world is going to end if I don't renew my domain name (so I don't see how MS could overlook these warnings).
Another amazing thing is that in December 1999 Microsoft forgot to renew the Passport domain name (the domain name that is used for Hotmail.com) and somebody bought it for $35!
Luckily for Microsoft, the dude who bought it did it so Hotmail would continue working.
Microsoft gave him a $500 check for his good deed which he put on ebay in order to raise money for charity.

Handmark has some great Palm OS games.
I tried Monopoly for Palm OS and Battleship and both are great.
I did encounter a problem with the sounds in Battleship, it works with disgusting system sounds instead of the Clie sounds database that comes with it (I installed the game and the sounds on the Memory Stick so that may be the problem).
Other than that, both are a great way to pass time when you are waiting for the train.

Pictures of the upcoming Sony Playstation Portable (PSP) are popping up all over the web (check out a concept picture of PSP).
Its specs are also pretty impressive: a 480x272 pixel display, built-in wireless capabilities (802.11b), 7.1 channel Dolby surround sound, and 1.8GB "Universal Media Discs.".
The Nintendo GameBoy better beware (the Nokia N-Gage is already in a lot of trouble so the PSP is not good news for Nokia either).

I don't how I got there, but this morning I found myself at www.msnmessenger-download.com which looks like a totally legitimate site for downloading MSN Messenger 6.1.
It is not (MSN Messenger is currently at version 6.0)!
This site looks so real that I really pity the poor people who are tricked into installing this (and god knows what happens to their computers).
Never download and install software that you aren't sure where it's from (although with the evil site you are sure that you are downloading from Microsoft).
Just so you know: MSN Messenger should always be downloaded from http://messenger.msn.com.
Watch out!

Flip Flap is another online game.
At first it may look easy but it's not as easy as it looks.

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University are creating a system for improving image search engines.
Instead of looking at the image's context (basically the text that is around the image) they want to create a huge database of images and information about each image, and have an artificial intelligent system "learn" it.
The problem that they ran into was how to input all the information about the hundreds of millions of images that they want in the database.
They came up with an ingenious way: make a game out of it.
In the ESP game players describe an image and they get points when they both use the same words (and the system learns how to describe the images in words).
Pretty creative!

Check out these instructions if you want to change the location of your My Documents folder.
Usually my C: drive is filled up so it doesn't help that the My Documents folder is also on C:.
Now you can easily move it to a drive that has more free space on it (it really is easy to move the folder).

Today I ran across one of the worst web sites I've ever seen: AEG UK.
The usability of this site is horrible.
In the main frame (yes it uses evil frames) all the links are pictures that don't have any information whatsoever about where the link is leading (not even an image alt or writing something usable to the status bar).
The rest of the text on the page is not clickable.
When you do click on one of the images (having no idea where you are going to end up) then you sometimes end up stuck in a page where you can't go back (clicking your back button only keeps redirecting you back to the same page, not the original page that you came from).
Ahh!
There are probably a ton more problems with this site but I can't stand even evaluating it.
They don't even get my seven seconds.

Fashion designer Julien Macdonald has created three exclusive .laptop bag designs for Intel, to celebrate the growing role that technology plays in women’s lives.
The bag comes in three colors and I think it looks butt ugly.

Yes, yes another game :)
This one is Mini Racing (Mini as in the Mini-minor car).
This game is like those old toy car race tracks where you all you need to do is press down on the gas controller and know when to release it (before sharp turns) so you don't go flying off the track.
At first this game sounds boring but it was pretty fun.

Mowing the lawn too hard for you?
Then you can try to build a radio control lawnmower, like this guy did.
If he hooked it up to one of those riding lawn mowers he could give the neighborhood kids rides while he mows their parents' lawns.
