Super Mario Rampage

Here's a modern version of the classic Super Mario Bros.

The difference in this game is that Mario has a gun so instead of having to maneuver you way around the enemies you just run and shoot everything before you reach it :-)

Fire away...

Firefox Shortcuts

Here are some great keyboard shortcuts for Firefox.

Firefox, for those who aren't familiar with it, is an excellent browser that is considered as the browser that will knock Microsoft Internet Explorer out of the first place in the browser popularity contest (that Microsoft has been winning for quite a while now).

Get Out

The goal in this fun quest is to get out of the room you are in.

You can look around the room, find objects, pick up things, and use the objects that you find.

I still haven't been able to find the entire solution so let me know if you do...

Death Watch

If you like to keep up to date about who died (especially celebrity deaths) then Blog Of Death is the site for you.

In this site you can find news about famous people who died, and some background about them.

Did you know that the actor who played Jelly in "Analyze This" (and its sequel, "Analyze That") died?

Drag the photos of Bush on to the circle and see the real George Bush.

Uncanny isn't it?

Bigger Disk

LaCie Bigger Disk is an external hard disk that holds, get ready for this, a full terabyte (1,000 gigabytes) of data!

You can buy it for $1,200 (which seems like a pretty reasonable price).

Just to get some perspective, a terabyte of music could play continuously for two years!

I bet that in five years this will come standard with every PC...

Copy Of A Copy

This paranoid dude always got nervous about making copies of copies of CDs.

He always felt like there would be a quality reduction with every copy (like with copying old analog tapes.

So he set up an experiment to copy 100 generations of a CD (making a copy of a copy of a copy...) and to compare the original CD with the 100th generation copy.

The final results (as expected): the 100th generation is exactly the same as the first CD.

Now he's stuck with 100 used CDrs...

Self Tuning Guitar

The self tuning guitar is a computerized mechanical tuning system that adjusts the tensions of the strings, making it possible to keep your guitar in tune and change tuning while you play.

I wonder how Hendrix would feel about this....

Morse Code Addition

The @ symbol has now been added to Morse code, the 160 years old communication system.

The International Telecommunications Union has voted to add the @ symbol which will be known as a "commat".

This is the first change in the language for at least several decades (the last change was certainly before World War II).

It turns out that many ham radio operators use Morse to exchange emails in order to initiate conversations over the Internet.

Underground Animals

Animals On The Underground is an odd site.

It's devoted to finding animal shapes in the Underground map.

Turns out that they found quite a few animal shapes.

Big Stuff

Do you like big things?
I mean really BIG things.

If you're in the mood for a 10 pound chocolate bar, a five foot toothbrush, a 7 inch Aspirin Pill, or a 3 feet long, size 86, shoe (and who isn't in the mood for these priceless items?), then boy do I have a site for you.

Great Big Stuff is an online store that has all these and tons more oversized items.

There are some really cool gift ideas there.

I know someone who would be very happy to get a huge box of Mac & Cheese and Jello Pudding...

Must-Have Free Utilities

Yahoo has a piece from PCWorld about 10 free utilities that will "let you work smarter".

There's actually one util that got a permanent place in my system tray: Pure Text (and I really use it all the time).

I try out tons of free applications but very few remain installed, and I'll regularly use only a selected handful.

The Great Gatsby

Back in 1939, Ernest Vincent Wright wrote a novel called "Gadsby." Not one that will go down in history with its counterpart, "The Great Gatsby," but this book does have one feature that is rather impressive: It is 267 pages long and has about 50,000 words--none of them contain the letter "e."

eBay Arbitrage

Some people have figured out a way to get good deals for stuff on eBay: misspelled items.

People who put stuff up for sale on eBay often don't check their post for spelling mistakes.
So when others search eBay they won't find their post therefore there aren't many bidders for the item (and the price remains low).

Many people are actually buying misspelled items on eBay (for cheap) and then reselling them on eBay for a higher a price (by posting without spelling mistakes).

They even catch buyers who may have spelling mistakes in their searches by posting with several spellings (both with and without spelling mistakes).

CPU Monitor

You know those tester strips on Energizer and Duracell batteries?

This site explains how to create a CPU monitor using those AA battery testers!

Not very useful but cool idea and great that it actually works (not that I tried it myself, I trust what they say there).

World of Ends

World of Ends is an interesting article about what the Internet is and how to stop mistaking it for something else.

It explains some of the mistakes we have made regarding the Internet (some of which we we insist on making over and over) and some of the very basics of what the Internet is and isn't.

A nice read.

What to Rent?

The single greatest question troubling mankind at this time is "What movie should I rent ?".

What to Rent comes to answer just that question.
When you sign up (for free) it asks you some questions and creates a personality profile for you (with questions like "What percentage of people within 5 years of your age enjoy the same movies that you do?" and "How many of the following movies have you seen?: Pulp Fiction, Being John Malkovich, A Clockwork Orange, Memento, Fight Club, Clerks, Full Metal Jacket, American Beauty, Requiem for a Dream, Trainspotting? ").

Then when you want to rent a movie you login to the site, tell it what kind of mood you are in (in the mood for a fun movie, a film festival...) and the site spits out a movie that matches your personality profile and the mood you are currently in.

According to the site I should now rent "The Sting" (which I haven't seen so I can't tell if I like it or not).

Personal Sub

Looking for a new way to get around town?

Then you're in luck: for the bargain price of $78 million you can get your very own personal luxury submarine!

To quote from the site:
The Phoenix 1000 is a 65-meter (213') personal luxury submarine. The initial design was originally executed for a client and now awaits a buyer. As proposed, the submarine would constitute the single largest private undersea vehicle ever built, and arguably, one of the most significant personal transportation devices of the century.
